Starbucks Card Rewards and My Starbucks Rewards
Starbucks ran a card-based rewards scheme from 2008, merged it into My Starbucks Rewards in 2009 and in 2016 began awarding Stars by money spent. Membership and card-balance figures are the company's own reporting. No company document read cites a psychological theory.

What happened
A trade timeline records the launch of the Starbucks Card rewards program in April 2008 and a Gold Card in November 2008. In November 2009 these were merged into My Starbucks Rewards. On 12 April 2016 Starbucks changed the earning rule: members received 2 Stars per dollar instead of one Star per visit, and a free reward needed 125 Stars.
The psychological idea
A stored-value card holds prepaid money, and a rewards scheme gives members points, here called Stars, toward free items. Starbucks's annual report says customers who register a Starbucks Card are automatically enrolled in Starbucks Rewards in nearly all markets. Stars can be earned by paying with cash, cards or selected mobile wallets at company-operated stores and most North American licensed stores.
In practice
Starbucks reported 16 million active members in the program as of December 2018. In its first fiscal quarter of 2024, ended 31 December 2023, it reported 34.3 million 90-day active members in the U.S. and record U.S. card loads of 3.6 billion dollars. Its balance sheet showed 2,199.8 million dollars for stored value card liability and current deferred revenue at that date.
Why it mattered
A listed company reports its membership and prepaid balances, so the scheme is unusually checkable, though only as company self-report. It also shows how one firm changed a scheme from visits to spend and publicized the change.
Limits and qualifications
Every figure here is the company's own report, not an independent audit. The balance sheet line combines card liability with current deferred revenue, so it is not the same as unspent card balances. No company document read says Starbucks designed its program from a psychological theory or from the goal-gradient research. Dates for the first scheme differ between sources.
Evidence behind the claims
A Starbucks release of 19 March 2019 says Starbucks Rewards was introduced in 2009, had about 16 million active members as of December 2018, and gave 2 Stars for every dollar spent on eligible purchases.
A trade timeline lists the Starbucks Card rewards program in April 2008, the Gold Card in November 2008, the merger into My Starbucks Rewards in November 2009, and a February 2016 move from a visit-based to a purchase-based structure.
The new earning rule launched on 12 April 2016: 2 Stars per dollar replacing one star per visit, with a free reward at 125 Stars; Starbucks said the vast majority would earn rewards just as fast, if not faster.
Starbucks's fiscal 2024 annual report says customers who register Starbucks Cards are automatically enrolled in Starbucks Rewards in nearly all markets, and that members earn Stars by paying with cash, credit or debit cards or selected mobile wallets at company-operated stores and most North American licensed stores.
The company's Q1 fiscal 2024 release reports 34.3 million 90-day active U.S. Starbucks Rewards members, up 13 percent, and record U.S. card loads of 3.6 billion dollars.
The Q1 fiscal 2024 balance sheet shows stored value card liability and current portion of deferred revenue of 2,199.8 million dollars at 31 December 2023 and 1,700.2 million at 1 October 2023.
The 2019 Starbucks release, the Q1 fiscal 2024 release and the annual-report loyalty passage read describe the scheme in business terms and cite no psychological theory.
